Walters & Cohen wins Scottish school prototype contest

Walters & Cohen to design the new Lairdsland Primary School in east Dunbartonshire, a prototype scheme which could be rolled out across Scotland.

The practice, which is headed by joint AJ Woman of the Year prize winners Cindy Walters and Michál Cohen, was selected with Reiach and Hall by Scottish Futures Trust to develop a reference primary school for Scotland.

At the end of this process East Dunbartonshire local authority chose to develop the Walters & Cohen scheme for Lairdsland Primary School.

The firm drew up ‘costed’ design proposals to RIBA Stage C, as well as outlining how the concept could be scalable for 200-300 pupils so that it could be repeated elsewhere in Scotland ‘in an efficient, cost-effective way without compromising on quality’.

According to the practice, over a ten-week period the firm ‘attended numerous workshops, consultations, ‘live’ school visits to establish precedent, and planning and highways meetings…. [hit] the deadline for their completed design report with a solution that bettered SFT’s cost and area parameters’.

During this time Michál Cohen presented the practice’s designs and findings to 16 Scottish local authorities. The Lairdsland scheme will be delivered by East Dunbartonshire Council.
