The chips are down

The residents of Will Alsop’s ‘Chips’ building in Manchester are not frying. In fact, for most of last week (13 February) they were freezing

For three nights the good people in Urban Splash’s multi-coloured £20 million New Islington centrepiece were without both heating and hot water. The cause, the AJ understands, was a broken ‘environmentally friendly’ boiler. As there was no back-up boiler, a temporary one had to be installed by the developer.

This unwanted big chill has since motivated one angry resident to set up a Facebook page for other ‘Blitz-like’ survivors, which lists a number of problems with posts ranging from ‘the splashback fiasco’ to ‘sinks don’t need to be fitted to the wall, just in the vicinity’.
