Studio Bednarski wins Copenhagen inner harbour bridge contest

London-based architecture practice Studio Bednarski has seen off the likes of Zaha Hadid Architects to win the two-stage contest to design an opening bridge in Copenhagen’s inner harbour

Working with specialist engineers Flint & Neill, the practice devised a ‘unique sliding mechanism’ for the 50m-long opening span which allows pedestrians to stay on the bridge even when open.

The ‘slightly sinuous’ design, which is 180m-long in total, is part of a larger scheme which includes three further smaller bridges.

Practice founder Cezary Bednarski said: ‘We have deliberately avoided high structural elements, which would interrupt views across and
along the harbour, both when the bridge is closed and when it is open.

‘Views of the new Opera House from Knippelsbro, for example, would not be disrupted by our design.;

He added: ‘Me and Ian Firth [of Flint & Neill] have won all five bridge competitions that we have jointly entered.’

Bednarski also worked with New York-based mechancial engineers Hardesty & Hanover as well as lighting designers Speirs and Major on the scheme.
