Rubbish adventure

Hats off to Michael Pawlyn, director of Exploration Architecture, whose 60ft catamaran made from recycled plastic bottles successfully crossed the Pacific Ocean, arriving in Sydney last weekend

The 128-day journey from San Francisco to Sydney had all the makings of a delightful summer break – except the route. David de Rothschild, explorer and founder of Adventure Ecology, sailed the boat (The Plastiki) close to the notorious Pacific garbage patches, which contain millions of tonnes of rubbish.

Pawlyn said: ‘We behave as if the sea has a limitless capacity to absorb our pollution, and as long as it is out of sight we’re not bothered.’
