New Practices #91: Andrew Daws Projects

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Andrew Daws Projects, London

Founded: Autumn 2010

Main people: Andrew Daws

Where have you come from?
After completing my MA at the University of Westminster, I spent 15 years at Piers Gough’s CZWG, eventually becoming a design partner.

What work do you have and what projects are you looking for?
It varies between small-scale domestic work, and large-scale residential and masterplanning projects. Whatever the scale, the intention will always be to create effective work. I recently completed preliminary designs on two large residential schemes for sites east and west of London and, collaboratively, have completed a masterplan for 650 homes for a site south of Croydon.

What are your ambitions?
I love the independence of being in a practice of my own, but I’m ambitious and want more opportunities to design and deliver high-quality buildings. While my intention is to remain agile as a small practice and consultancy, I enjoy working collaboratively, and am happy to contribute my skills to larger teams.

How optimistic are you?
I’ve always been optimistic, but wisdom comes at a price, and not every project or client has followed through, for whatever reason. Nevertheless, there is work, even if it’s harder to win. I got through the first year. Now, it’s about making the most of the next.
