New Practices #48: 5plus Architects
The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy
5plus Architects, Manchester
Founded: October 2010
Main people: Directors Phil Doyle, Carly Grice, Jon Matthews, Paul Norbury and Adam Thornton
Where have you come from? The five of us formed the senior management team at HKR’s Manchester office. Prior to HKR we were all at Sheppard Robson’s Manchester office, except Adam who was at Broadway Malyan.
What work do you have? The backbone of the business is existing relationships with local and national clients, such as Manchester Airport, Argent, Ask, Peel Holdings, Royal London Asset Management, Aviva, Development Securities and Bruntwood. We also want to increase our graphic design and branding. We have a strong track record in competition wins so we will always undertake these.
What are your ambitions? To retain all 15 of our staff through the transition to the new business. Beyond that we need to build the awareness of 5plus as a stand alone design studio. The ethos will not be fundamentally different to what we did in the past – creative, highly sustainable buildings that embody the old school principles of “long life, loose fit”, “lean construction” and innovationWe’re serious about architecture, but also want to be seen as a fun place to work.
How optimistic are you? Optimism is key to being an architect – optimism that what you do actually makes a difference or that things will change. It’s increasingly hard to predict the future but we love buildings and, importantly, our clients recognize this.
