HKR offshoot 5plus opens new London outpost

Burgeoning practice 5plus Architects has opened a new London office following a ‘a strong first year’ which has seen the firm double in size from 13 to 27 staff

The outfit, which featured as New Practice #48, was set up by a clutch of former HKR directors following the closure of the one-time AJ100 big hitter’s Manchester office.

The new outpost will be headed up by ex-HKR supremo David King-Smith who will lead a team of nine people in the capital.

5plus director Jon Matthews said: ‘The new office has been driven entirely by workload and a requirement to deliver projects nationally – it is not a speculative punt on a new city.’

He added: ‘We are very much a people business and King-Smith, whom we have known and worked with for many years, is a great fit with our philosophy and aspirations. He has exemplary credentials and he’s passionate about architecture.’

As well as this eight home scheme in Kingston Road, Teddington (pictured above), the practice is currently masterplanning Airport City for the Manchester Airport Group, overseeing the redevelopment of Chatham Docks for Peel and is refurbishing  Auchinlech House, Birmingham into a new 300 bed hotel.
