First look at dRMM's Hastings Pier designs

These are the first images of dRMM’s proposal for Hastings’ fire-damaged pier

The practice won the RIBA competition for the project in January 2011 (AJ 30.01.11), beating FAT, Adams & Sutherland, Wilkinson Eyre, Niall McLaughlin Architects and Swedish eco-specialist White AB.

Contest-backer Hastings Pier & White Rock Trust is currently trying to obtain a compulsory purchase order to secure ownership of the pier and ‘bring it into community hands’.

The first phase of the proposal includes substantial repairs to the structure, a new deck, a visitor centre and the redevelopment of the surviving pavilion into a restaurant. Future phases could include the reinstatement of banjo-shaped swimming platforms and the landing stage, plus a sliding timber canopy that could move along the length of the pier.

The practice hopes to hear in November from the Heritage Lottery Fund whether it has secured financial backing, with a view to starting on site in April 2013.

The architect’s view

The design team has embraced the individualistic, eclectic spirit of the two towns that border the pier, Hastings and St. Leonard’s-on-Sea. The intent is to create a venue that can cater to a diverse range of local events and activities. The approach is one we trust the Victorian forefathers would embrace: pier as engineering spectacle in close connection with the sea, as a project, ongoing, not in stasis, and forever reinventing itself.
