Finalists for Robin Hood Gardens overhaul announced

A team including architects Jestico + Whiles and Aedas is battling an HTA-led consortium to land the contentious £500 million redevelopment of the 1970s Smithsons-designed Robin Hood Gardens

The AJ can reveal that a bid by Countryside Properties and Swan Housing, featuring Jestico + Whiles, has been named as one of two finalists for the east London project, against a rival submission backed by developers London & Quadrant and Telford Homes with fellow AJ100 giant HTA.

The news will come as a blow to firms linked with other consortia, including Tower Hamlets Community Housing with Bellway Homes and housing association Poplar Harca.

The winning scheme for the site, dubbed Blackwall Reach by contest-backers Tower Hamlets Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, will see the brutalist 213-flat estate replaced with 2,000 new homes.

The final selection is expected by December 2010. Jestico + Whiles, Aedas and HTA declined to comment, while Tower Hamlets refused to confirm the finalists, saying it went against procurement procedures.

Last year (AJ online 15.05.09) then culture secretary Andy Burnham sealed the fate of the Smithsons’ landmark after rejecting an appeal from the Twentieth Century Society against the government’s decision not to list the estate and granting immunity from listing for five years.
