Corking ideas sought for The Art Box

An ideas competition has been launched to find designs for a new mobile performance and exhibition centre in Cork.

The Art Box - which has a construction budget of no more than 750,000 euros - would provide a venue which professional artists, arts organisations, community and voluntary groups can use to stage exhibitions and events within their own locale.

As a space, The Art Box will be used for a range of different events. These would include:

film screenings;

art exhibitions, both installations and hung art work;

performances, ranging from theatre, recitals and cabaret to dance;

public meeting space;

festival club or meeting point; and

workshop space.

The brief demands that the winning scheme will: 'Be innovative and demonstrate quality and excellence in its design and the execution of that design. The standards within the structure must be equivalent to those in fixed exhibition and performance venues.'

The competition prize fund comes to Eu10,000 in total and will be awarded at the discretion of the assessors.
