Construction industry calls for quotas to ease gender inequality
More than half of those questioned in a survey believed the industry should look to quotas to force companies to employ a certain number of women
The questionnaire by the construction recruitment website CareerStructure.com, professionals voiced their concern over the lack of women in construction, with almost two thirds stating they did not feel enough women were working within the construction, engineering and built environment industries.
Over half of those questioned work in companies where 90 per cent of the workforce is male.
Greater support from management, better recognition of female talent and introducing girls to construction careers at the early decision making stages were called for in order to attract women.
Rob Searle, commercial director at CareerStructure.com said: ’Despite industry professionals’ uncertainly over a perceived shortfall in female employees, ensuring that they continue to promote themselves to women. Events such as the ‘Women In Construction Awards’ help to ensure that existing talent within the industry is recognised, and it is now the overall industry’s responsibility to build upon their success and encourage more females into construction roles.’
