Confusion sparked as energy minister says Green Deal has not launched

The construction industry has again been thrown into confusion about the government’s message on the Green Deal

Speaking during a panel debate at the Conservative Party conference this week, Greg Barker told audiences:  ‘It didn’t launch last week. What happened was that the first part of the Green Deal architecture went live.’

‘The Green Deal per se has several different parts, but it would be incorrect to say that the Green Deal launched either loudly or quietly last week.’

This announcement comes after government insistence, that to avoid further delays, the Green Deal would launch in October, albeit in phased stages.

This came as Paul King of UK-GBC responded to Cameron’s closing speech at the conference, highlighting the perplexity, by saying: ‘This was a case of so near, yet so far. Great that renewables and the Green Investment Bank got a name check, but this was a golden opportunity to set the record straight for those businesses who this week voiced grave concerns about the lack of certainty on Government’s green aspirations.’

‘What was needed was a clear vision of a green economy and the importance of meeting our carbon targets. What we got was something pretty timid indeed’.

The Launch has taken place according to plan - we made contact with British Gas to book an appointment for a Green Deal Assessment - which is scheduled for November 16th - albeit with Finance to be provided by Barclays. We in the Industry, must be positive about the Green Deal - it will work, given enough enthusiasm from the Service Industry and the General Public. The fact that the legislation has gone through to enable the finance to be added to Energy Bills is the main achievement of the Green Deal Scheme. Paul King is right to push the Government - it is his baby !! Let him keep on their case - and we should get on with making the Public aware ....
