Concept model unmasked as Wilkinson Eyre skyscraper proposal - image

This supposed concept project, currently being exhibited at the Royal Academy under the guise of a notional tower scheme, is in fact Wilkinson Eyre's proposed skyscraper development for 20 Blackfriars Road.

The model, for the site opposite the controversial Beetham Tower on London's South Bank, resembles a twisting, angular sculptured block and contrasts with Ian Simpson's smooth-lined 68-storey skyscraper.

Further details of the scheme on the key plot remain sketchy, with developer Land Securities maintaining a wall of silence.

However, it is understood that CABE has already had a peek at the early designs, which could reach up to 40 storeys.

The tower is the latest in a number of high-profile building projects in the area, including Will Alsop's nearby Palestra development.
