Civic Trust unveils 2006 award winners - image

This year's winners of the Civic Trust Awards have been announced at a ceremony at Lords cricket ground.

Some 82 schemes won recognition for their designs last night, including Norman Foster's Sage Music Centre in Gateshead and Alec French's SS Great Britain museum in Bristol.

In all, 29 schemes won a full award, 34 projects were commended and 19 picked up a 'mention'.

Awards boss Vivienne Newlands said: 'Everyone involved in these wonderful projects deserves our congratulations.

'The 2006 Civic Trust Award winners successfully illustrate the positive impact that a wide range of projects can have on local communities.

'These are projects that are making a real difference, and we are pleased to see such positive change and development, appropriate to place, community and environment,' Newlands added.

The 2006 awards focused on 'urban' schemes from 2004 and 2005, while next year's event will award schemes in a rural context.
