David Chipperfield Architects is one of 23 practices selected from around the world to design 600 properties in the town of Óbidos on the Atlantic coast of Portugal.
The practice will be involved in designing villas and townhouses for a new holiday resort catering for those looking to buy a second home in the sun.
The 567ha development is based around a new golf course, and will include swimming pools, tennis and sailing clubs, and a luxury hotel.
The scheme, called Bom Sucesso, is being backed by developer Signature Properties Worldwide, which specialises in luxury properties for the rich and famous, and it claims its Óbidos project is 'probably the best architecture-led development under construction today'.
According to the developer, interested buyers can choose between a villa or a town house designed by its list of 'eminent architects', or they can buy their own plot of land and commission their own designers.
Chipperfield will be joined by local architects Carrilho de Graça and Portuguese star lvaro Siza among others.
