Chipperfield appointed to overhaul Royal Academy building

David Chipperfield Architects has been appointed to redevelop the Royal Academy of Arts’ building at 6 Burlington Gardens in central London.

The project will provide the RA with new exhibition space, education facilities, a new 250-seat auditorium, shops and a restaurant. The scheme will also provide office accommodation for all the Royal Academy’s staff.

The practice has begun a feasibility study for the project, which will be completed in September. Overall completion is scheduled for 2012.
