Cartwright Pickard wins planning for Kensington health centre
Cartwright Pickard has bagged planning for this mixed-use day care centre and housing scheme in Kensington, west London
The £3.5 million development for Octavia Housing features day care facilities on the ground and first floor with 13 socially rented flats for elderly people above.
The centre will replace the borough’s existing centre which has been running for the last 50 years.
James Pickard, director of Cartwright Pickard Architects said: ‘Kensington Day Centre will provide much needed accessible housing in this London Borough and act as a social hub for the older community.’
The scheme is set to complete in March 2015.
The architect’s view
‘The design vision for the site is to create a contemporary scheme that forms a distinctive focal point for the local area. The development aims to form a strong distinctive primary frontage to Convent Garden, provide an attractive day care centre and community hub.
‘The centre provides a naturally lit, double-height reception space, designed to be welcoming and to aid orientation. On the first floor a multi-purpose room optimises the prominent view towards Kensington Park Road and offers a visible connection to the day centre activities.
‘A private landscaped garden situated at the south east corner of the site provides sunny amenity space along with a café and lounge for both day care users and residents’.
