Campaigners have raised concerns about plans for flats in the garden of a George Gilbert Scott Jnr-designed house in Hull
Bankway Properties’ plans for the development in the grounds of the grade-II listed building by George Gilbert Scott Jnr have been slammed by local objectors, who say the development would spoil the architecture of the house on Salisbury Street in Hull.
The building is one of six designed by Scott in the Avenues conservation area of Hull. Scott was the son of the Sir George Gilbert Scott who is most recognised for the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras train station.
Speaking to the local press, Ivan Donado, who lives in the Scott building, said the planned development would destroy Scott’s original vision for the house to have a garden.
Stuart Turton of Sancton-based Turton Associates, who designed the new scheme commented: ‘We consider the design to be entirely appropriate. We recognise the importance of the George Gilbert Scott building and our scheme would complement this.’
The 2,620m² development, which is currently in for planning, contains four flats. Two applications have been lodged for the site: one for a traditional design; and one a contemporary style block.
An application was originally submitted for a development on the site back in 2011, but was withdrawn after the council raised concern over the scheme.
A decision will be made on the planning application on 9 October.
