Broadway Malyan completes Merseyside community centre

Former Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman has officially opened Broadway Malyan’s £21 million Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park

The facility features two 25-metre swimming pools, a gym, a six court sports hall and spa, as well as performance, events and conference spaces.

Broadway Malyan director Matt Brook said: ‘The finished result represents a new breed of mixed-use public building through the consolidation of circulation space into one central, naturally day-lit atrium, from which all facilities can be viewed and accessed.’

The complex, built for Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, also includes a Lottery-funded youth club which was designed in a collaboration with Knowsley Youth Forum. It features a skate park, media suite, dance studio and training kitchen with café.

Sustainable features include a biomass pellet boiler which resulted in the scheme being rated ‘BREEAM Very Good’.
