bptw completes Hackney housing

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS] East London-based practice bptw has completed the refurbishment of a 1930s block of flats in Hackney

The studio has revamped the four-storey Shakespeare House building, creating 18 apartments, and adding a fifth storey.

The existing block has been reclad in bricks and balconies have been created giving residents views over communal green spaces.

According to the practice the original building, which contained 24 flats, suffered from a raft of problems including ‘a lack of amenity space, inadequate living areas, small kitchens and bathrooms, and a number of security issues’.
