Boris accused of ‘all talk and no action’ over London housing crisis

Boris’ approach to the housing crisis has been labelled a ‘shambles’ as it has emerged that a housing strategy launched for consultation two years ago was never actually published

The Mayor’s current draft ‘Revised London Housing Strategy’ went out for consultation back in December 2011, but the final report was never actually made public.

Labour London Assembly housing spokesperson Tom Copley said: ‘Rents and house prices are sky rocketing while over a million Londoners languish on council housing waiting lists. It is staggering that against the backdrop of this crisis the Mayor is due to launch yet another draft Housing Strategy for consultation without having ever published the final strategy he consulted on two years ago.

‘What absolute dither and delay from this Mayor. To call it a shambles is generous.

‘Boris is showing once again that he is all talk and no action. We do not have a Mayor who is tackling London’s housing crisis, we have a Mayor planning to at some point have a plan to tackle London’s housing crisis. Londoners deserve more.’

According to think tank and lobby group London Councils, more than 525,000 new homes need to built in the capital each year for the next eight years to keep up with current demand. But at present levels just 25,000 will be constructed by 2021.
