Birds Portchmouth Russum wins footbridge comp - images

Birds Portchmouth Russum has won the competition to design 'landmark' footbridges in Rochester, Kent.

The London-based practice saw off entries from Hakes Associates - one of the hot new talents featured in the AJ's 40 Under 40 - WAM Architects and Spence Associates to win the contest (ajplus 19/1/06).

The result was announced last night by competition-organiser Design Excellence in North Kent.

It is hoped the two pedestrian bridges will become the centrepiece of the Rochester Riverside development - a key regeneration project on the River Medway.

Birds Portchmouth Russum has a history of bridge design and has previously worked with engineer Techniker on a bridge scheme in Newham, east London, which was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Buildings award.
