Benson & Forsyth's Watford health campus - featuring football ground - goes for planning

Benson & Forsyth's masterplan for the £1 billion Watford Health Campus scheme in west Watford has been submitted for planning.

At the heart of the 26.5ha brownfield development is a 510-bed hospital for West Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

The scheme, which also includes a mix of 400 private and affordable homes and plans for the redevelopment of Watford FC's Vicarage Road ground, has been bubbling along for years, with London-based Avanti Architects responsible for the hospital development.

Guided by Watford Borough Council, the hospital project, along with several smaller healthcare packages and the redevelopment of the stadium, have all been pooled into one massive masterplan.

Speaking to the AJ in May (Benson & Forsyth to rework Watford FC's stadium in health campus plan) Benson & Forsyth director Alan Forsyth said the masterplan 'knitted a hospital into the urban fabric' on a site that had previously 'been a mess, a patchwork of unsuitable places'.

The project, which is expected to be completed by 2016, is being backed by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Watford FC and Watford Borough Council as well as the East of England Development Agency.
