Austin-Smith:Lord wins go-ahead for new Guildford Civic Hall

Austin-Smith:Lord has obtained planning consent for this £16 million scheme to replace Guildford's Civic Hall.

The new 1,000-seat venue for Guildford Borough Council will host a range of events including choral performances, rock concerts and comedy shows.

The building will combine structurally glazed curtain walling with sandstone sourced from inside the UK.

The council said the new venue - which replaces the existing Peter Shepheard-designed Civic Hall - will create 'an anchor at the upper end of Guildford High Street'.

'It will also encourage diagonal public movement through the foyer to the parkland beyond,' it added.

Work is expected to start on site in November and completion is expected in 2008.
