Tower Hamlets delays decision on Robin Hood Gardens

Fans of Alison and Peter Smithson’s Robin Hood Gardens, and perhaps also, social justice might be interested to learn more about Tower Hamlets Council’s move to delay by a month the decision about which design team’s project should replace the estate.

It appears that what council officials have called a ‘procurement delay’ could, according to a local residents’ association, actually be hesitation on behalf of local mayor, Lutfur Rahman.

The association says the council’s cabinet pulled a compulsory purchase order agenda item as a result of a letter it sent to Rahman threatening legal action over the council’s failure to provide an ‘independent tenants advisor’ to residents. The letter set a seven-day deadline for legal proceedings and was despatched to Rahman six days prior to the planned meeting. Coincidence?
