Despite a Stirling Prize-winning-year, things haven’t all been going Zaha Hadid’s way recently

The First Lady of Architecture will have been disappointed to learn that her furniture, fashion and product design company – Zaha Hadid Design – have released not-so-sterling financial figures for 2009.

Astragal has discovered that profits in her design company fell a hefty 55 per cent from the year before, despite increased investment and a slashing of administrative expenses. However the Iraqi-born star will have been kept sweet by the high spirits at her 60th birthday party in Piccadilly’s Burlington Arcade, where the icing on the cake was literally the icing on the cake.

A surprise, special celebratory gâteau was brought out, cleverly moulded out of confectionery in the shape of one of her projects, Moscow House, a Russian villa in the exclusive Barvikha Hills, near the capital city. The centrepiece was accompanied by a message from its senders, Mr and Mrs Vladislav Dorinin. For those not up-to-date with celebrity gossip, Mrs D is supermodel Naomi Campbell.
