LA scare for Meier

Talk about architects being judged by their persuasive talents. Before Richard Meier started building the Getty Centre museum in Los Angeles he had a meeting on the hilltop with some objectors…

One was adamant the site would afford a perfect vantage point into her bathroom. But when Meier asked where her house was, she replied: ‘I don’t know, but it’s out there somewhere.’ Clever Meier!

But can we say he dealt so well with a more slithery LA resident? Given a small on-site shack to stay in, the RIBA Gold Medallist was shaken one night when he woke to see a rattlesnake close by. Put off by the incident, he shied away from the hut for the duration of the project. Evidently not a snake charmer…
