Brazilians plan to resurrect Christ in London

An enormous 9m-tall statue of Jesus – similar to Rio De Janeiro’s famous Christ The Redeemer statue – is planned for Primrose Hill in London

The Brazilian government is reportedly sponsoring the monument which will mark the end of London’s 2012 Olympic Games and celebrate the passing of the torch to Rio where the games will next happen in 2016.

A London-based planning consultancy has been hired by Brazil’s tourist agency to present the plans to the public, reported the Camden New Journal.

Malcolm Kafetz, Friends of Primrose Hill chair, told the newspaper: ‘I do not see why it should go there. I think it sounds unsuitable for a piece like this.

‘It does not represent anything of England or Primrose Hill. Primrose Hill is a place for people to go and enjoy the view. I will be bringing this up with the Friends committee.’

A Camden Council spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm we have been approached informally. If a formal application is submitted it will be consulted on and decided in the normal way. Residents will have the opportunity to comment on any proposals.’
