Boris, Crossrail and £2 million pounds of art

Astragal notes with amusement how Boris Johnson is using Crossrail to wheedle more money from the country’s beleaguered developers

Land Securities is a case in point. Its central London project, which would transform the area around Victoria Station, received approval in February. Having paid £2.5 million to secure the approval (and revamp Victoria Palace Theatre), Boris has used his power of veto and ordered Westminster Council to withhold planning permission until the developer digs deep and finds a further £1.2 million for Crossrail. Land Securities has threatened to spend less than the £2 million for statues and other ‘art’ in the area. Astragal is unsure if this aggressive move will be enough to get Boris to back down however…
