‘It’s very difficult for me to criticise another architect,’ said John Madin during a recent interview with the Birmingham Post

Having apparently overcome his anguish, he then launched into a blistering attack against Mecanoo’s proposed replacement of his brutalist Birmingham Central Library (pictured).

Madin accused the new scheme of being a ‘disgraceful waste of taxpayers’ money’, adding it was unlikely to stand the test of time. As well as branding the filigree facade ‘very odd’, the 85-year-old described plans to put the children’s library underground ‘quite extraordinary’. They say age mellows…
