AEW win £35m Southend Museum and Art Gallery

Astragal has sniffed out another little nugget of hot architectural gossip while taking the sea air down on Southend Pier

Although the local council has yet to confirm the appointment, Astragal can reveal that Manchester-based practice AEW has won the battle to land the town’s prestigious new £35 million Museum and Art Gallery project.

The practice saw off a shortlist which included Rick Mather, Austin Smith Lord, Avery Associates Architects and AAA/DLA. The firm is best known for taking over and polishing off the Liverpool Museum following the controversial departure of concept designers Danes 3XN in 2007. As one observer whispered in Astragal’s ear, ‘It will be nice for them to actually be in at the start of a major museum scheme’.
