Grandstanding at Battersea

If Battersea Power Station needs a big idea then it’s hard to think bigger than squeezing a 60,000-seat football stadium next to – or maybe into – the iconic and decaying Grade II*-listed structure

Yet plans by developer Almacantar to create a new home for Chelsea Football Club, partly using Giles Gilbert Scott’s creaking masterpiece, are currently sat on KPF’s and Rafael Viñoly’s drawing boards.

What does it look like? A source close to the project said the team was creating a ‘unique kind of grandstand incorporating part of the power station into the stadium’.

What does that mean? Something ‘really splendid’ and ‘really fabulous’ the source explained. We wait with baited breath.

  • Fundamentally, the key issue in regard to the selection of a site for a sports stadia with a capacity 60,000 is its connection to suitable public transport. Battersea Power Station does not have a suitable connection nearby. The extended Northern Line does not serve fans coming from Chelsea’s heartland. What is needed is a location close to an existing transport hub, say Clapham Junction – perhaps as part of a masterplan to regenerate/rebuild the Winstanley Estate. Combined with our proposals for a new footbridge between Imperial Wharf and Battersea this approach would starts to make some sense.
