Arup's green headcount

  • Comment

It led me to wonder just how many sustainability consultants Arup has. Shareef explained that Arup now has 10,000 staff worldwide, which includes approximately 3,000 taken on in the last three to four years. Sustainability must dominate the recent hires because I meet Arup's sustainability consultants everywhere I go and have yet to come across the same person twice – except the ubiquitous Chris Twinn.

But Arup has one less now with BDP’s announcement of ex-Arup Richard Buckingham as its new sustainability director. The previous incumbent, Trevor Butler, is off to greener pastures for an academic degree in British Columbia and to run his own practice, Archineers. I’ve written in the AJ about the blurring boundary between architects and engineers, but this title was a new one on me.
