Armed Forces Memorial competition winner announced

Architect Liam O'Connor has won the international competition to design a new Armed Forces Memorial at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire, it was announced yesterday.

The memorial - which will be constructed in Portland Stone - will have engraved on it the names of all the 16,000 British servicemen killed since 1945.

The site will also feature a sculpture by Ian Rank-Broadley. The designs are the focal point of a campaign to raise £4 million from the general public to fund the scheme.
