Alsop plans Battersea tower

Will Alsop is poised to submit plans for a landmark 19-storey residential tower next to the London Heliport in Battersea, south-west London

The maverick architect – who rebranded his practice All Design after splitting from RMJM two years ago – confirmed he expected to submit plans for the high-profile scheme before the end of the month.

The move comes less a year after a helicopter collided into a tower crane on Broadway Malyan’s nearby Vauxhall Tower, raising concerns over the development of tall structures close to flight paths. Recently completed nearby developments include Broadway Malyan’s 19-storey Falcon Wharf residential tower and Chantrey Davis’ 15-storey Bridges Wharf hotel and apartment building.

Local authority Wandsworth Council said: ‘The area is attracting interest from investors and we have now had pre-application discussions with several landowners.’

Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Battersea Will Martindale said: ‘I’m keen to see what [Alsop] comes up with. I hope the helipad will not be an issue [and] certainly the council should take a long, hard look at the proposals from a safety perspective.’
