Allen Tod feathers its cap with RSPB centre

The RSPB is looking to secure funding for this new £250,000 Discovery Centre at its Old Moor reserve in the Dearne Valley, near Barnsley.

Drawn up by Allen Tod Architure's Sheffield office, the centre has been designed to

help inexperienced birdwatchers learn how to view the local wildlife at 'close proximity'.

The building will sit on a flood bank on the edge of the existing educational facilities and will give visitors panoramic views across the 100ha reserve.

Independent from the other visitor areas, the centre's lighting and exhibition video displays will be powered by photovoltaic panels.

Yorkshire Forward has funded the initial feasibility study for the timber building at the site, which is an important area for breeding wading birds.
