Vinoly's Uruguayan airport takes off

Rafael Viñoly has revealed images of his new terminal at Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

The scheme is the first airport project for the Uruguayan, who has offices in London, New York and California, and only his second in his home country.

Work has already started on the curved-roof, low-profile building which is due for completion in early 2009.

Describing the design, Viñoly said: 'In Uruguay, friends and family still come to greet you at the airport or see you off, so this terminal provides great spaces for the people who aren't travelling as well as those who are.

'The atrium, the main hall, the terrace, and the passenger concourse make this a dramatic and welcoming place for everyone.'
