10 Design bags massive Chinese college job

Hong Kong-based 10 Design has been appointed to design a 550,000m² college in China

The practice, setup by former RMJM architects in 2011, was chosen by Taiwanese giant Ching Fu to design the Fujian Professional Photonic Technical College.

10 Design will be responsible for masterplanning the 12,000-capacity campus. In phase one, the practice will also take on landscape design, and architectural design of five of the nine buildings.

The practice will have a role in phases two and three as well. The project involves a fast-track programme with overlapping construction schedules.

Ted Givens, design partner at 10 Design, said: ‘The core concept is to interweave a very large scale college into a natural setting, preserving and enhancing the site’s existing character.’

He said the masterplan was built on passive solar principles. Sustainable technologies at the campus will include photocatalytic nanocoatings; algae for air purification; thermal cooling; green walls; hydro power; and solar power.

The college is part of a grand masterplan for Fujian, and will supply trained workers for the province.

It will open in September 2013, with places for 3,000 students, and reach full capacity four years later.

10 Design was founded in September 2010 by five former members of global giant RMJM.

It now has offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Edinburgh and Denver.
