New Forest design guide created

A Hampshire planning authority has created a design guide for the area to help architects

The New Forest National Park Authority published online case studies for different types of development in the 570km² region.

It aims to help designers keep to the distinctive character of the national park and comply with planning requirements.

A spokeswoman for the authority told the AJ: ‘We hope it will help people get on the right tracks early on and keep to the character of the New Forest.

‘People with land and property have told us they are keen to keep to character – and we also get some designs that are not suitable.

‘We have ongoing conversations with architects in the area and also give pre-application advice.’

Examples in the design guide include Forest cottages designed to sensitively incorporate modern day aspirations, as well as contemporary buildings that blend in.

New Forest National Park Authority planning committee chairman Pat Wyeth said: ‘The built environment of the Forest is one of the precious assets which make the National Park so special and is one of the main reasons why people love to live and visit here.

‘We hope homeowners will use this new tool so they can play their part in keeping the New Forest special and distinctive for generations to come.’
