Let’s hope that as the Union Terrace Garden proposal has been rejected, a more holistic strategy and vision for Aberdeen and Shire emerges. Why not do something truly radical and move the station into Union Terrace Gardens with a new garden above allowing pedestrian only access at the level of Union Street and Union Terrace with vehicular access and some parking at the Denburn level. Visitors to the city would then be deposited in the heart of the city rather than on the side of a busy road with no clear link to Union Street and the rest of the city – what a wonderful first impression.

The whole thing is utterly farcical at every level? But continual reference to the Peacock centre as the wronged panacea seems disingenuous when comparing UTG proposals? Both looked technically challenged, and in a city blighted by empty buildings, and with no shortage of city centre gap sites, why put an Arts Centre or anything else for that matter (more trees maybe) in a hole, in a public Victorian Garden? Sort out the basic infrastructure of the city, and the gardens will continue to look after themselves.

The RIAS is hardly being slammed…Perhaps the AJ should take a more objective journalistic view and canvas a somewhat broader spectrum of opinion? You could ask Joyce Deans PPRIAS for her opinion? Putting together a cohesive, and engaging conference in Scotland with relevant industry leading figures is difficult enough in these challenging times, the sex of the speakers is something of an irrelevance; much like Peter Cook's spectacularly patronising comment.

The brief states that the first stage is 'anonymous'... but the key assesment is focused around a 'case study' and it asks for you to illustrates a project from concept through to completion. Maximum marks will be achived by high profile published projects that can demonstrate through publication and awards the level of quality and innovation the brief is asking for. Those practices that have built big and built well will score the highest points... there is simply no point in the 'anonymity', unless they ask for specific thinking about this site and this project.

It puzzles me that prior to the mid 20c, buildings in general were simply commissioned by clients and designed by architects. Generally they were not procured; so some buildings were extraordinary (if circumstances allowed), others were not. That’s the way Glasgow was made, and until recently it seemed to work just fine? What’s gone wrong?

That research in the global field is an essential context for procuring and designing architectural projects in the UK, I still can't help but feel that to showcase our awe at foregin architectural and cultural achievements (my own first thought being some of the housing at Orestad in Copenhagen) when we - ourselves - are on show to that international field is somewhat defeatist. I mean, the modesty is becoming and rather British and all but... we're boldly attempting to think about trying when everyone else is achieving?? - Gordon Hulley
