John Smith's comments
Why don't they just put Heatherwick's expo pavilion here instead? It will need a home.
Nice open selection process then Richard.
That just stupid and makes asrchitects look like ignorant bigots that can't accept variations in style.
What ever happended to pluralism?
...and why are they asking a racing driver for his opinion anyway.
Not got much on at the moment then?
I'm loving all this - modernism, classicism, pluralism, - ooohh I want to hug them all.
Bring on the of mutual lovin'.
Take a chill pill mate.
Those images aren't by Stanton Williams they are generic images put together for the brief.
Oh and another thing Boris, watch out because the people at Middlesbrough are so embarrassed about it all that the guy who so boldly commissioned was recently given the heave ho.
Start packing up your desk now.
The problem is you see that this is really a monument to British failiure. In the same year that Corus virtually collapses on Tyneside Boris Johnson commissions a multimillion pound tower which will be built overseas.
Dear Sir Terence
I don't think the steel is coming from Corus. Their Middlesbrough plant is shutting partly because Anish's other ugly sculpture being built on the banks of the Tyne is made from seel from the Netherlands not the local mill.
Dear Mr Serota,
You seem to think that architects should be flattered by the fact that 'Anish wanted to be there'. Is he some sort of god? In our discipline works are commissioned on the basis on whether they are any good or not. Not on the basis of who designed them. The art world is full of sycophants.
Check out the Daily Mail take on this - especially the reader's comments at the bottom. It's all a bit chilling.
What a stitch up.
Getting a small residential client to sign a contract?
I bet the fees were peanuts as well.
Abolish the ARB!
This abomination combined with the one being built in Middlesbrough will be the end of Anish Kapoor.
Building a major structure is quite different to putting on a successful show at the Royal Academy.
This will be a national disaster to eclipse that of the millenium dome.
The residents of Fulham losing all their original cornices and skirtings to plasterboard and insulation - tear out the kitchen because we need to slip insulation in behind it. It will never happen.
They will need to be flooded out by a rising sea first.
Mind you it might stop a few holiday houses from being torched by the locals.
And when they go off accidentally they soak all your stuff - what about that Damien Hurst over the sofa?
They have just under 2.5 years to build it.
Where are their ties?
It won't work to that design.
It will wobble like a buckled wheel on a bike.
The engineers are deluded.
Agreed. The AABC is a totally closed shop benefitting those already on the register and making it very hard with anyone with less than 5 years experience to get on it. You can't get any work unless your on the register and so you can't get the required experience to get on it. Get rid of all the registers. They are probably illegal considering modern laws on competition.
In 2008 there was an RIBA Competition called 'Beam Goes Mobile'.
What happened to that?
I hope it wasn't yet another wasted competition process.
Sometimes this fluid sculptural approach works really well - but not here.
Can't architects not be pluralistic?
Would it not be ok to do orthonal sensitive one week and be fluid the next?
I think that Zaha probably knows this was the wrong approach but is so intent on sticking to the formula for the sake of 'branding'. Why can't she do a Chipperfield style building once in a while if she thought it the best approach?
We are currently getting fees well over the fee scales - they are actually holding us back.
Chew on that.
The Seifert Scheme takes my vote.
If it ain't broke...
Can Just Facades please stop making sycophantic comments. On this web site - its a tedious marketing ploy. The Hamiltons building with its 40mm shadow gaps is an abomination, as is the GZWG ona and the Spacecraft one etc etc...
This competition took place in January - What took them so long?
Most of the minarets built outside asia are simply badly designed and ugly.
Of course people will vote against them.
Its a stupid survey.
The AJ has wet its pants just short of the toilet again.
Why cant they wait until its finished?
I suggest the AJ conduct a straw pole of what they percieve to be well known young practices. I think that they will be surprised at the shear number of firms with a turnover of less than £300K. Why have a minumum turnover at all? It will rule out submissions from some of the many very creative and talented firms.
