Work starts on Jestico + Whiles' free school project

Construction work has started on Jestico + Whiles’ Stour Valley Community School in Suffolk

The £4.8 million refurbishment and extension of buildings previously occupied by Clare Middle School is planned for completion in September 2012.

Jestico + Whiles’ plans to upgrade the school’s 1950s and 1980s buildings and remodel their internal spaces while a 1,000m² new build element will contain science laboratories and a studio which will be open to the local community.

The scheme will result in a 20 per cent increase in floor space to accommodate increased pupil numbers but the design aims to deliver a 20 per cent saving on energy costs.

Jude Harris, associate director at Jestico + Whiles , said: ‘Stour Valley Community School is an excellent example of how existing school buildings can be re-used and upgraded to provide modern facilities for students, teachers and the wider community within modest budgets.’

The team for Stour Valley Community School is led by Balfour Beatty and includes Mansell, Gifford, PLACE Design and Planning, Bidwells, SRL and MLM.
