Members wanted for architects' Rubble Club
Pity the architects. Commissions are low, projects are stalling and access to project finance is looking as likely as Prince Charles and Richard Rogers bonding over a quiet pint
Fortunately, benevolence is shining on the profession. A new organisation called The Rubble Club has been launched which provides support for architects who have seen one of their buildings demolished in their own lifetime. It already boasts Stephen Hodder of Hodder Associates, for the imminent demise of the award-winning Berners swimming pool in Cumbria, and Neil Gillespie of Reiach and Hall for the callous demolition of a toll booth on Forth Road Bridge among its members. Astragal has learned the membership rules are quite strict. An architect would be ineligible if it was discovered he/she deliberately demolished a building ‘simply to become a member of this prestigious organisation’. So don’t be naughty.
