Zaha Hadid Architects

Zaha Hadid Architects will celebrate the groundbreaking and naming ceremony for its contemporary art centre in Rome next week.

The 26,000m 2scheme, now given the title MAXXI - 'The Museum of Art for the XXI Century'- was won by the practice through competition in 1998. It will provide a flexible arena for contemporary art and architecture and live events.Thursday's ceremony will be attended by Zaha Hadid, along with the Italian ministers for culture and for infrastructure and transport. The first stone to be laid will contain a bronze sculpture designed by Ettore Sottsass.

The building is due for completion in 2005.
