WS Atkins chairman Michael Jeffries received a pay rise of 13 per cent last year, taking his annual earnings to £391,000, according to the company's latest annual report. Jeffries, an architect, earned £313,000 in basic pay with the rest coming from bonuses, profit-share and other benefits.

As the AJ went to press, WS Atkins announced that it was to cut 400 backroom jobs in a £10 million restructuring initiative. Architects will not be affected.'I am comfortable that we have a policy which attempts to pay people properly for the work they do, ' said group finance director Ric Piper. Jeffries' earnings dwarf those of other architects, as well as the salaries of the company's 12,000 staff, who earn an average of £26,000 a year.
