Associate head at the University of West of England
Elena Marco is the associate head of the department of architecture at UWE, where her teaching and research focuses on the crossover between health, urban planning, sustainability and architecture. Marco has been key in setting up a new architecture and environmental engineering course jointly accredited by RIBA and CIBSE, which is ‘aimed at giving young architects the skills to push sustainablity up the agenda’.
Previously, she worked for Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, where she developed her focus on sustainable design. Her research has included work with the World Health Organisation looking into the links between health and architecture. Marco emphasises these as a driver for sustainability.
She said: ‘The profession needs architects who take a holistic view to sustainability, who embed the concepts into everything they do rather than simply adding it as an afterthought.’
