I read the letter 'Strangelove model was somebody else' (AJ 27.11.03) with interest.

To graduates in chemistry, Edward Teller will be remembered for his part in the formulation of the John-Teller theorem in 1937. According to the book Quanta: a Handbook of Concepts by P W Atkins, the theorem states that 'in a nonlinear molecule, there is always a distortion that removes any orbital degeneracy of its electronic state'.
