Frankfurt has the highest gross domestic product in Europe, with a per head figure of £52,000 a year, according to a new report for England's regional development agencies.

By comparison the people of Liverpool produce on average £13,500 per head.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) says local authorities are processing planning applications two per cent quicker than this time last year.Some 43 per cent of major applications are dealt with within 13 weeks, while 73 per cent of all others are complete within eight, the ODPM claims.

Charitable donations from large British companies were up by 43 per cent in 2002, says the annual Charity Trends report.
