THE PRESIDENT'S MEDALS

Martha Schwartz

COMMENDATION / SILVER MEDAL

NIGEL PEAKE

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH

Grand Galata, Bazaar Bridge

Tutor: Dorian Wiszniewski This is an investigation of the gesture and personal exchange of the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul. Peake's hypothesis is that gesture exists before language. With Galata Bridge being the physical borderland bridging the Eminonu and Galata sides, his proposal is to inhabit this in-between condition and to revitalize the bridge in the way that a delicately inserted 'slab' mends a stair.

By bringing the Grand Bazaar to the bridge, the project breathes new life into the crossing.
