The Way of Enthusiasts

The Way of Enthusiasts (27 August - 25 November) has been conceived and realised by V-A-C, a Moscow based, not-for-profit arts foundation that creates international platforms for the presentation of contemporary Russian arts

V-A-C has an amazing reputation in the art world and this year have already been massively involved in manifesta, documenta as well and now this presentation for the Biennale in August.

The exhibition  focuses on a really seminal period in Russian social/cultural history, specifically the collapse of Krushchev’s ideal of designing a total way of living via the creation of mass social housing projects and ‘microrayons’ - purpose built residential environments.

The artists and works in this show all deal with the impact of the failure of  these experiments,  both conceptually and practically. One piece in particular, from young artist, Arseny Zhilyaev, (tipped as one of the hot new names on the russian art scene) will be quite a talking point. ’Laundry’ (2012) will reconstruct a fully operational soviet style launderette in the very grand palazzo that is housing the exhibition, and which will genuinely be set up for people to use to wash their clothes. As there are only two launderettes in Venice, there should be a really nice blurring of art vs function plus a lot of clean clothes!
